HISTORY
Founded in August 1957, the name Ᾱlappuzha is a toponym. ‘Ᾱlayam’ means ‘home’ and ‘puzha’ according to Dr. Herman Gundert’s dictionary. In short, the name Ᾱlappuzha means ‘watercourse’ or ‘river’.
So, the name refers to the network of waterways and backwaters of Alappuzha and the surrounding area.
Early in 20 century, the viceroy of the Indian empire declared that Allapuzha is the Venice of the east because fascinated by the beauty of the place and nature. Above all, the area is hovering around 46.20 km2 of the Kerala state.
CULTURE
As part of the Kerala state, the official languages are Malayalam and English.
Furthermore, you will also find a diversity between locals. For instance, Hindu and Christians are the vast majority in the state, on the contrary, the percentage of Muslims is very low.
